In The Dock Light - Edumundo

Today's students have grown up with smartphones in their hands. No surprise, then, that gamification in higher education is on the rise. Far from being screen based distractions, studies have shown that educational games improve engagement, motivation, and academic outcomes. EdTech pioneers, Edumundo are amongst those reshaping higher education through digital learning.

After spotting Dock's work with clients like Teach Active, the team got in touch for help improving their UK online presence.

This edition of In the Dock Light explores our relationship.

Who Are Edumundo?

Led by serial entrepreneur and TED speaker Menno Thijssen, Edumundo helps Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) improve academic outcomes through tailored digital learning tools.

Transforming how students learn since 2001, the Netherlands based EdTech company serves over 100,000 students annually at more than 300 universities in nearly 40 countries.

What does Edumundo do?

Edumundo gamifies university courses. One of their core products is business simulations -educational tools where students manage and make strategic decisions for a fictitious online company. These simulations are particularly effective for business and management courses, giving students a taste of real world dynamics.

Alongside their gamified platforms, Edumundo also supports universities with digital textbooks, eLearning content, and dedicated online portals. In short, as HEIs look to adapt to a generation raised online, Edumundo helps them modernise and engage students more effectively.

How is Dock helping Edumundo?

Our challenge was to help Edumundo reflect their innovation and streamline the user experience online.

Their existing site was trying to do too much. Built in HubSpot and serving multiple territories, it was cluttered, confusing, and sometimes, you'd find yourself reading Dutch on the UK site. Plus, the majority of visitors were students logging in rather than potential customers - something the team hadn't realised.

Our job was to untangle the issues, improve the flow, and help the team better understand how people were using their website.

Keen to get started, the Edumundo team flew over to our Liverpool studio for a discovery workshop. Their energised, collaborative team were a joy to work with, making it easy to hit the ground running.

A few months later, we returned the favour with a trip to their head office in The Hague for a hands on strategy session.

We spent a full day with them, reviewing the website, discussing their audiences and market, and exploring the differences between the UK and the Netherlands. Together, we developed a brief for a new website, including a site map, design refresh, and user journey overhaul.

We ended the day with a beer in the sun at The Hague's equivalent of Concert Square. (Not bad for a flying visit).

Rather than pushing for a total rebuild, we presented flexible options, including our recommended ground up redesign in WordPress or a rework of the existing HubSpot setup.

Short term, we're focusing on UX improvements, clearer calls to action, and a visual overhaul that matches the quality of their product.

What's next?

With regular check ins and a potential future website rebuild, the Dock–Edumundo relationship is just getting started. The partnership marks an exciting step for us - supporting a client with global ambition and developing our EdTech capabilities on the international stage.

We wouldn't mind another trip to the Netherlands, either.
